This session covers soil improvement, compaction effects, site assessments, tillage BMPs, and more to create climate-resilient landscapes. Free for LCA members, $25 for non-members. Register now to gain practical insights into soil management and preparation! Practical soil management and preparation techniques are key to the success of many landscaping and site development projects. Often, the project sites we inherit are devoid of acceptable soil for establishing turf of plants, and therefore, must either be enhanced or replaced with a more acceptable soil. In the DMV, which possesses primarily fine textured and easy to compact soils, understanding how to evaluate and enhance soil quality is even more important. Further, creating healthy soils which are more ‘climate resilient’, and better able to deal with the changing weather patterns caused by a changing climate, is key. Not only do dense soils slow plant root growth (and establishment), but they do not ready accept rainwater, adding to the growing problem with storm water management and soil erosion. The presentation will review: • Reasons for proper soil improvement and specification, • The effects of soil compaction on plant growth and soil properties, • Soil quality and functionality basics, • Site assessments and soil preparation, • Soil tillage and site volume BMP’s, and • Benefits of soil amending. This event has been approved for 1 ASLA credit. Speaker
