Backyard Oasis in Clarksville

The key components of the project included a stunning pool, pool decking, a cabana/pool house featuring a bathroom and changing room, and an outdoor kitchen. Carefully placed outdoor lighting enhanced the ambiance of the oasis during evenings, creating an enchanting atmosphere for gatherings and leisure. The addition of a pergola adds shade and charm, creating an inviting space for outdoor dining and relaxation. Layout limitations, imposed by septic and septic reserve areas, demanded a highly strategic approach to design. We needed to fit all the desired outdoor features within the limited space allowed, ensuring functionality and aesthetics were not compromised. It's important to note that while we took charge of landscaping and architectural aspects, pool construction was contracted to other professionals. This project also built upon existing features, incorporating a smaller existing concrete paver patio with a seating wall and a fire pit area, seamlessly integrating these features into the new design. The remaining lawn space was transformed into an inviting oasis that expanded the possibilities for outdoor living.

Towson Residence

This project involved creating a gathering space that seamlessly integrated with the client's historic traditional brick home. Pennsylvania bluestone was selected to complement the brick. We designed a terraced patio layout, taking advantage of the raised elevation of the backdoor. The raised terrace served as the dining patio, providing easy access from the house for outdoor dinners. As the client is an avid griller, we installed a large outdoor counter with a built-in grill and smoker, along with storage cabinets for all their cooking needs. The clients expressed a preference for minimal plant maintenance, so we incorporated native hydrangeas that complemented the formal aesthetic of the space. These low-maintenance plants added beauty without requiring extensive care. Illumination was also a crucial aspect of the project since the clients often enjoyed their outdoor space in the evenings. Ledge lights were installed to provide functional lighting. Additionally, overhead string lights were added to create a relaxed ambiance for their nighttime enjoyment.

Great Falls Freeform Hideout

The client wanted a fun outdoor living space that reflected their family and entertainment needs. Rather informal they wanted a free flowing pool that was flanked by a full featured pool pavilion and extensive pool deck with fire pit. The pavilion included a large outdoor kitchen and dining area which over looked the pool. We added water features throughout the bond beam wall to add visual interest while breaking up the vast stone veneer. Custom imported Travertine paving was used throughout the project including curved coping and border pieces to ensure a free flowing visual effect. The pool pavilion included extensive wood details to enhance the aesthetic nature of this space. Inline with the clients vision we used a brighter blue pebble finish on the interior of the pool that ties into to the overall fun feel of the project.

Arlington French Villa

The client wanted a landscaping package that was reminiscent of Parisian gardens that would enhance the style of the house. The front landscaping included a paver driveway, walkways, a sitting area, and extensive plantings. For the back of the house, the package included a pool, fire pit, hot tub, and outdoor kitchen. We incorporated a lot of materials to enhance the space. The raised IPE pool deck cantilevers over the pool, and we incorporated a tile perimeter overflow hot tub, with several water features to create different visual and sound effects. A floating IPE bench was built around the modern fire pit to balance the space. Extensive LED lighting was used throughout the backyard to give the project visual appeal to both inside and outside of the house.

Modern Rustic Retreat

This space included a large three-season room, which overlooked their swimming pool and outdoor recreation space. They wanted a blend of materials that would complement the existing home, while giving the space a modern feel. To achieve this, we blended local materials and imported Jerusalem Limestone. The outdoor living space included a fire pit, bond beam wall, and series of water features. The client also wanted a large spa, which we gave visual interest to by using a polished slab of granite as the overflow against the limestone. The client wanted the three-season room to be a true extension of their home, so we incorporated ceiling heaters with vinyl and mesh retractable screens to ensure they could use it year-round. We also added a fireplace and extensive woodwork throughout for complete cohesion of the entire build.

Contemporary Arlington Farmhouse

A builder brought us in to design and build a backyard space for their clients in Arlington. The client had a large backyard in north Arlington where they wanted a complete environment to enjoy with family and friends. We helped site and design locations for outdoor areas for the builder while designing and building their pool, pool deck, and fire pit area. The client wanted a simple but elegant pool that brought visual interest yet kept ample lawn space. In an effort not to truncate the space we incorporated the spa into the pool which allowed for a harmonious flow from the outdoor deck all the way through the pool house.

Hunting Crest Residence

Our landscape, carpentry and masonry crews built a new front entry featuring a flagstone arrival court, radially curved stone stairs, an arched portico, a stone curbed driveway and lush plantings throughout the front yard of this two-acre estate. Our maintenance crews have maintained the property since completion. In addition to the spring cleanup, lawn maintenance and plant care, our role includes management of irrigation, exterior lighting, arborist and tree work, holiday lights, and snow removal.

Severn River Residence

We were called to this beautiful river front property in Annapolis to renovate the entrance and front foundation of the property, while a home renovation was underway. Existing hardscape elements including driveway, low stone walls and steps were to be retained. The goal was to achieve a major visual change, provide views from within the house and main entranceway, while maintaining privacy from the street above. Provide a fenced area for the clients two small dogs.

A Lovely Pastoral Setting

The owners wanted a swimming pool/spa with pool deck for entertaining guests. We designed and managed the swimming pool construction and designed and installed the remainder of this beautiful living area, including the grading, stone walls, steps, and patio, and plantings. The pool deck is constructed of full range natural cleft Pennsylvania flagstone with hidden drains and is large to allow for several sitting areas and a firepit. The owners did not want to block the view of their pastures, so we did not add plantings on the far side of the pool. The plantings between the pool and the house were chosen to provide an explosion of color during the summer when they would be enjoying the pool. We set the little waterfall into the natural hillside and added natural boulder steps as a second access from the first floor.

Waterfront Residence in Annapolis

This waterfront property in Annapolis needed a total renovation to create a new outdoor living space for the family. The new patio gave them a place to overlook the water, while the new grading and water management on property created open views. The restoration plantings required by the City were strategically placed to create privacy for the homeowner while not obstructing views over the water. A path through the hill allows easy access to the lower rain gardens which manage the rainfall & allow safe access to the private pier below. Overall a great outdoor space for those who want to live near and be on the water!

Easton Kitchen/Cutting Garden

We were called to this beautiful river front property to create a kitchen/cutting garden for the family along with a she-shed for the wife to escape to on occasion, to read or just get away for a bit. To keep out greedy wildlife and digging dogs, our carpenters built a custom white picket fence to enclose the gardens. The classic design details and sparkling white finish act as a link between the new garden and the architecture of the house. Gates on three sides provide easy access. The main gate includes an arbor and a more elaborate gate to announce the primary entrance. The cutting garden is primarily in the back surrounding the she-shed. Knock out Roses ring the interior perimeter of the garden and provide color off and on from April through November. Veggies are located at the end near the house for quick and easy harvesting.

Georgetown Residence

We were called to this formal Georgetown residence to add a swimming pool to the established backyard. The client wanted the pool to appear as if it had been planned from the beginning and not like an afterthought. Maybe not the beginning, as the house dates back to 1817… but they did not want it to look like a modern renovation. They requested the new pool and adjacent hardscapes to be visually tied into the existing hardscapes and preferred to retain the existing landscape plantings as much as feasible.

Woodley Park Residence

The site is located on a very challenging corner lot in Northwest Washington, DC. The project area is approximately 1,200 sf with a grade change of 8’. There is an underground storm water management system along the rear of the property adding to the complexity of the project. The design phase, permitting and engineering for completing this masterpiece took over 8 months. The components of the project include a custom 26’ x 10’ swimming pool, a 6’ x 10’ spa, stone walls, composite decking, landscape planting and lighting. There are many details throughout the space including the hand tooled Lake George wall stone, the Indiana Limestone pool coping, special skimmer lids and tons of rebar!

House on Willow Hill

As a tribute to its history, this property was given new life through construction of a modern English country home adjacent to an existing log cabin. The exterior speaks to this adaptation as well with modern features like a pool and sport court, fitting perfectly into the same space as livestock pastures and cobble lined greenhouse garden. First steps were to control sediment and erosion through massive infiltration pits with 36" pipe, a network of drainage, and soil profile reconstruction and decompaction. This was a significant effort on a more than five-acre property with over three acres of manicured lawn and gardens. Aside from aesthetic planting and lawn, wildflower meadows were introduced on the outskirts of the more detailed gardens to blend the upkept areas with the natural forest perimeter. As the greenhouse developed from concept to reality, we were again commissioned to general contract the remaining build, which included masonry, carpentry, custom metal fabrication, irrigation, lighting, tree felling and pruning, then grading/drainage and planting/turf.

Resort Living in Your Own Backyard

This client asked us to design and build a new backyard full of the experiences and luxury of resort living. Working from a palette of stone, plantings and lighting, we delivered beauty, durability and enjoyment for both day and night. This backyard dream resort includes an expansive patio, gas fire pit, outdoor kitchen, pavilion, poolside lounging, outdoor lighting, landscaping, walls, pillars, steps and gates. Extensive lighting provides visibility, safety and security, as well as illuminating the trees and plantings at night. Finally, we designed and built an effective drainage system that protects the entire space from water and erosion, including proper grading, channel drains (that do not distract from the visual aesthetic) and interconnected underground pipes. Our happy client often invites family and friends to enjoy grilling, dining, fireside relaxing, swimming and other joyful experiences.

We transformed the outdoor living area by incorporating various outdoor rooms. A pathway of concrete pavers leads to a secluded area with a custom-designed firepit, outdoor buffet, and custom-designed contemporary fountain. With additional complementary plantings to integrate the hardscapes in the surrounding landscape. We created an outdoor living and dining area through the use of concrete pavers, retaining walls, and artificial turf. We also added a private lounge area to connect the outdoor living space to the rest of the backyard, which was leveled for other activities. Lastly, we built an informal walkway to bridge the backyard to the renovated front entrance. The entrance now boasts a revitalized driveway, artfully arranged plants, and decking, creating a welcoming entrance to the property. .

DC Patio Redesign and Installation

The owner desired a more elegant patio space for a set of furniture, a grill nook for the existing grill, a more elegant set of stairs, and separation from the parking area to the gathering space. The new design included planting beds around a new bluestone patio with granite curbing for delineation and separation between the bed areas and the patio. The basement stairs were veneered with local veneer stone and the wing walls capped with thermal bluestone. Step treads were clad with thermal Pennsylvania bluestone and step risers with matching veneer stone. The steps from the house to the patio were built with pressure-treated framing and composite decking and railing with low voltage lighting. Long flowering perennials were selected to maximize flowering time and some aggressive vines to green up and soften the fences. A variation of late winter, spring, and summer flowering plants are blended together.

DC Resort Style Sanctuary

The project included a full renovation of their existing deck, regrading of their backyard, and a new pool and entertainment space. They wanted a deck renovation that included a waterproofed under deck loggia where they could gather with their family to watch movies that had limited paving areas to ensure we left plenty of lawn space. For the space under the deck, we added phantom screens and privacy walls for a feeling of intimacy with their family and friends. The usability of the space was enhanced with in-wall heaters and fans and a fireplace on the feature wall. We also extended the patio to ensure the space felt grander and gave more seating options. The pool was designed as an entertainment space for their kids, allowing plenty of space for swimming and games.

The overarching goal was to create a space for friends and family to gather that was modern and clean to meet their personal design aesthetic while blending with their existing farmhouse and rural setting. Our first challenge was to decide on a vessel for the swimming pool that was modern yet made to work in the country—a self-contained, retro-fitted shipping container with a glass viewing window became the centerpiece of the outdoor living space. The pool was set into the slope of the existing topography, so the window was fully featured from below while a new deck provided easy access from the first floor to the pool from above. Combining our client’s taste and with the existing farmhouse aesthetic was done with Ipe wood for the deck. The natural wood elements paired with straight lines and angles offered the perfect contrast to maintain both aesthetics. Additionally, the sunken resin-bound gravel fire pit area provided the perfect balance of country-rustic and clean-contemporary. Cable railing was used to continue the infusion of modern touches while providing

The landscape around the entire property underwent a comprehensive transformation. Stone walkways link the driveway to the front and rear outdoor spaces. Lush plantings were introduced to infuse the area with a mix of textures and colors. A modern deck, charming patio, and an adjoining sunroom fit nicely into the naturally wooded setting. In this transformative project the outdoor space underwent a remarkable change. The plain lawn was cleared, and the existing hardscape was demolished to make room for fun. A rectangular pool surrounded by silver travertine sits between the large, roofed pavilion. The raised spa under the arbor adds intimacy to the space. A wood burning fireplace, well thought-out lighting and a larger outdoor kitchen ensure the parties continue well into the evening. The addition of an infiltration system and a revamped drainage setup ensured efficient water management. As the project concluded, the outdoor area evolved into a cozy space for the entire family to enjoy.

The existing 16' height garden walls which held up a small lawn and planting bed, could not be tasked with holding up a new pool and pool house. We had to design from the ground up, in order to ultimately get the client what they asked for. We worked on several conceptual designs before ultimately coming up with the final design. Architects were brought in to provide details for the two level pool house. Structural Engineers were brought in to design the now 22' height retaining walls needed. Lastly, our group of engineers helped us get through the tricky DC permit process, where we worked within the scope of available lot occupancy square footage and nearby legacy trees. After two years of planning and construction, we finished with this gem of an outdoor living space.

Chevy Chase Escape

It was important to have a separate winter use of the space from the summer in this space. With limited area to design the space, we opted for an enlarged deck with Trex pergola for added shade and to create a separate seating space. Special engineering was required to achieve the open space below the deck without restricting the view and line of sight. Underdeck Oasis was installed to create a dry space below the deck. We enlarged the existing stone patio to meet the pool and centered the pool on the spa to ensure there was usable space around the pool for lounging and playing. The rear yard spa can be used in the winter while the pool is winterized. Creating the trellis on the left side property line not only added privacy in a tight space, but also created a visual anchor for the space. Armstrong maples line the rear property line for fantastic fall color and Foster hollies along the right-side property line are a great addition for privacy. The limelight hydrangeas carry color throughout the summer and offer great night interest.

The client wanted to rethink the backyard space as a whole, with the desire to incorporate a modest size pool, pool patio, outdoor kitchen area, new deck and stairs, and covered space. We designed and installed a space that allowed the client to enjoy all the elements they requested and would allow the family to host large gatherings. It was also very important that the covered space portion of the project, as well as kitchen/bar area, have a good view of the pool area. We were tasked with incorporating a lot of elements, and we had to stay relatively tight to the house so that we did not encroach on the septic reserve area. Furthermore, there was about 6' of grade change that we needed to address, and we really wanted to avoid building one very large wall on the low side. This is why we elected to create a terraced wall effect.

Spring Valley Residence

This picturesque Spring Valley Residence received an interior renovation with a new full scope exterior to match. Hardscape and pool crews provided the structure while we introduced aesthetics. Existing soils were heavily compacted, up to 36" below grade in certain locations and full of debris. A full-scale cleanup, decompaction, and rough grading was performed to commence operations. New plantings were performed in phases as ongoing construction boxed in access points for larger material and equipment. As the project evolved, so too did the Owners interests and the design was revised to meet the desired intent. A front lawn installation was performed just before Winter Holidays for erosion control and a little taste of the final product. Finally, a Spring push of planting brought the project full circle to provide a beautiful finished product to match the home's facade.

The client is a very big fan of natural looking landscaping with planting, ponds, and water features that would be usable instead of just decorative. One of the water features became a swimming pool that resembles a pond, with lots of plantings and rocks around, a waterfall that flows into it, and a separate hot tub that was placed to feel more secluded and overlook the gorgeous mountain views. Other standout features include the outdoor lighting package with nearly 300 color changing LED bulbs that can be controlled separately, a custom putting green was, and the rehab of an existing porch structure into a three-season room. The entry court in the driveway was redesigned to include a paver drop-off court with a circular inlay, and a new landing and steps were installed to dress up the front of the home. Lastly, the front entrance gate to this property was redesigned with masonry walls, pavers, and landscaping to create a very grand entrance.

The clients wished for the clean lines from the interior of the home to flow seamlessly to the outside entertaining areas and for the plantings to fit with the grand style of the home. Our team worked together to design a lush planting plan with plenty of space for entertaining. With a significant area of the rear yard being a lake, special considerations had to be made for placement of the pool, regarding both the setbacks and the high-water table. There is truly something for everyone: the large deck space with a shaded bar and seating below, a large outdoor kitchen with an arbor and more bar seating, the gas-burning firepit, and the built-in trampoline. As time passes, the landscape plantings will grow, providing even more privacy and making the home truly fit into its natural surroundings.

Capital One Center is a 26-acre mixed-use retail and cultural arts destination. It brings a vibrant community together with restaurants, shops, community events, and a state-of-the-art performance hall, all of which is anchored by the headquarters of Capital One. The crown jewels of this project include Capital One Hall, to be used as both a large on-site meeting facility and serve as affordable event space for community arts organizations; and “The Perch” known as the park in the sky, which allows guests to experience artwork, walk through a park, enjoy games, food and beverage and watch performances. This multi-level project was designed to improve this busy urban area’s walkability and connectivity, demonstrate how the area’s old office parks can be reimagined, and tie it to the city’s storm water management plan. All of these things are designed to create an environmentally conscious area where people can live, work and recreate.

Post Houston

Once the hub of the city’s U.S. mail system, the long-abandoned USPS headquarters in Houston was transformed by Lovett Commercial into a dynamic mixed-use complex expanding the city’s vibrant downtown. The project aims to be an adaptive reuse cultural epicenter, linking the city’s past with its future and strategically connecting neighborhoods, the theater district, and a park. The site’s design reimagines the Cold War structural rigidity of the historic building, repurposing it as office space and for public use where visitors can enjoy food, cultural and social activities, and a rooftop park. Additional focus was given to sustainability with the installation of a green roof and native material throughout as well as creating regionally specific landscapes.

Port Covington

We were approached by the owners of Boordy Vineyards, who wanted to revitalize the primary entrance to their barns and tasting room. It was previously a stone dust courtyard with poor drainage. The original concept an exposed aggregate courtyard with a tumbled bluestone circle in the middle where they would set their firepit. The client wanted the materials to reflect the agricultural character and age of the surrounding barns and the farm as a whole. We spent time with the client to review several previous projects of ours to show them various material options. We ultimately selected tumbled bluestone set in a herringbone pattern for the field of the courtyard surrounded by a granite paver border. Two walkways (one from a parking lot into the courtyard, the other from the courtyard down to the main barn) were built using patterned bluestone to match the existing terrace.

District Wharf

District Wharf—commonly referred to as simply, “The Wharf”—is a popular waterfront destination in Southwest Washington, DC. This mile-long stretch along the Potomac River is punctuated with restaurants, retailers, residences, and businesses, all complemented by monumental views and a vibrant culture. The landscape maintenance contractor is tasked with keeping this destination vibrant with color, including 450 planters/pots, 200+ trees, and two urban parks. The first thing one may notice about the landscaping on this site is the immense quantity and diverse plant palette showcased in the planters and pots scattered throughout. Every subsection of the wharf has its own look and feel. There are three annual rotations, each with a total of 5,000+ flowers and plants installed, and any struggling material in between rotations is swapped out immediately.

Tysons II also offers the Tysons Corner Metro Station onsite and express lane access to the Capital Beltway and Dulles Toll Road, as well as providing abundant green space and hosting appealing events such as Cirque du Soleil. In bringing together commerce, lifestyle and accessibility, Tysons II is a premier destination in the Washington area. The maintenance of the site includes care of 800 perennials/grasses/shrubs; 2,000 annuals; 60 acres of finished turf; 400 trees; edging; mulching; and irrigation management. Since taking over the site’s maintenance two years ago, there have been approximately 30 enhancements (ranging from small to large-scale and including hardscape and irrigation upgrades) to help augment this site’s visual appeal and functionality.

Garden Gate Landscaping

Seeking Respite in a Ravine Garden

Initially, the homeowner wanted to “clean-up” his overgrown ravine and establish a landscape to be viewed from above, with the central focus being placement of one of his sculptures: “Abduction of a Sabine Woman” by Giambologna. As the plan developed, the client and project designer began to envision a garden that beckons one to explore the entire space from several vantage points, and create a private garden filled with sights, sounds, and the emotions enjoyed during his travels. Having spent many years working and traveling in Russia, the client requested a replica of the extensive birch tree forests seen there. The gardens at Mt. Cuba in Delaware were also a strong influence to the garden development. An existing stone staircase led from an upper terrace to a mid-slope terrace, now capped over with flagstone. A second staircase leads to a lower-level terrace with amphitheater seating. The lowest staircase crosses over a “mountain stream” and leads to a glade with seating and a firepit. A smaller pathway leads through the garden to a secluded bench for quiet reflection.

City Ridge

City Ridge is a 10-acre mixed-use development located in Washington, DC, on the former Fannie Mae campus. City Ridge is composed of eight buildings. One of the project’s goals was to preserve and repurpose the Colonial Revival architecture of the former headquarters, seamlessly integrate the site with the surrounding community and serve as a model for sustainable site development. Sustainability was addressed in many areas, and the development was awarded the first LEED v2009 ND Gold certification in the DC/MD/VA region (and is only the second in the nation to achieve this certification). Additionally, the site received the prestigious 2021 Peoples’ Choice Award from USGBC’s Capital Region. Native trees, grasses, plants, and wildflowers were incorporated and were grouped with similar watering needs. Additional nods to sustainability were seen with the preservation of several “heritage” trees on the site and with the use of reclaimed materials. Granite cobble that had been used during the project’s original construction in the early 1950’s was removed, stored, cleaned, and reinstalled. Cobblestones were modified by hand before resetting them into their new context.
